Some of the Year 6 children are running a lunchtime maths club for our class. The club takes place on a Thursday and the children play board games linked to addition, subtraction, shape and time.
Today we had a lovely visit from Noah and his mum Shelly. Noah and Shelly talked to us about his wheelchair and shared a story they have written called A day at the zoo with #HugsForNoah.
Please visit http://www.hugsfornoah.co.uk/ for more information about Noah, Spina Bifida and his adventures. We hope Noah will come back to visit us soon.
Welcome to Year 1
Welcome back and we hope you all had a lovely summer.
We hope that your child enjoys the new challenges and approaches to learning that Year 1 has to offer. Miss Tarbit will teach the children all day Monday, Tuesday and Thursday morning. Mrs Rickerby will teach the children all day Wednesday, Thursday afternoon and all day Friday. Throughout the week the children will also work with Miss Mossop who is the senior teaching assistant in Year 1.
The Year 1 curriculum builds upon and extends the experiences that children have had in Reception. The children will have a more formal learning environment in Year 1 but they will continue to learn through play, alongside being involved in exciting topics so that they remain motivated, enthused and eager learners. RWINc phonics will be taught every day to help with reading, writing and spelling. The children are expected to become more independent readers and writers as the year advances.
We will listen to your child read regularly in school to assess their progress. The children will also have lots of opportunities to read and enjoy books throughout the week at school independently. Your child will continue to bring home a reading book as well as a RWInc home book to read. As the year progresses your child will start Accelerated Reader. We will send home more information about this programme when we introduce it to the children.
We will be introducing ‘Talk Homework’ at the start of the year. It is a chance for your child to have a conversation with someone at home about a topic we are writing about in class. We will give detailed guidance about the topic and the kinds of questions you may want to discuss with your child. Your child will have their own ‘Talk Homework’ book that has information about the topic and there will be space for you to record notes about what you have discussed with your child. The children will be using these notes during their exciting writing session on a Friday. Throughout the year your child may be bring home key words to read and spell.
This year your child will receive a login for Abacus maths online homework. We will send home more information about the homework along with the login details when we begin the programme. The maths homework may not always be online and we will put any other homework in a homework book.
The children will be doing PE on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please ensure your child has their correct PE kit in school and that all items are clearly labelled. We will be outside for one of our PE sessions so a pair of joggers/tracksuit bottoms and a jumper would be useful as the weather turns colder. All kits will remain in school for the half-term. If your child wears earrings please can you either remove them on P.E. days or provide tape to cover them. The children need to have a water bottle to keep in school. Please remember that we are a NUT FREE school.
Please use the home school log book as a communication between home and school. We have changed the log books we are using this year. Please let us know the end of the day arrangements for your child - bus or going to after school club and also let us know as soon as you can if someone different will be picking them up. Each week we will send home a note which will explain what we have been working on during the week. Remember to look at the school website for information. Our class is called Skiddaw so please visit our class page to find photographs and videos showing what we have been up to.
Our topic for this term is ‘Who do you think you are?’ We will be sending home a topic web detailing our focus for each of the subjects. We have attached the targets Year 1 children will be working towards. These targets are what the children are expected to achieve by the end of Year 1and we will be working on them throughout the whole year. We have also included the RWInc set 1 and set 2 sounds and the common exception words that Year 1 children are expected to be able to read and spell by the end of the year.
If you have any questions or queries about your child’s progress, please do not hesitate to contact us.
We look forward to a fun, happy and productive year with your children.
Mrs Rickerby, Miss Tarbit and Miss Mossop
