Dear Parents,
Following this week’s Parents Evening appointments and from listening to the concerns some of you have.. I have decided to amend our class homework schedule.
In line with the school policy (which can be found on the school website) all pupils are expected to read, practise spellings and times tables on a daily basis. Pupils will also be set talk homework in line with the week’s writing focus.
In Year 5, I have decided to amend the day in which homework is given out to a FRIDAY, this means children will have all weekend to complete homework as well as the following week, Homework will also be due in on a Friday,
Homework will consist of reading, a list of spellings (normally chosen to fit with current writing focus), talk homework and times tables. I have sent home today a new maths book, this will have learn it challenges which can be completed by your child for extra times table practice.
I recognise this is a small challenge to complete but children are aware they can extend this activity. For example, children can write the fact families for each calculation.
So to clarify, homework will be set on a Friday to return the following Friday. Children should be reading, practising spelling and times tables on a daily basis.
Thank you ,
Miss Ewart
Dear Parents and Year 5 Pupils,
Wow! I can’t believe we are at the October half term break already. What a whirlwind first half term.
Just a quick note to say thank you. Thank you for your support and hard work so far. We have been working extra hard in all areas to ensure expectations are known from the offset and I am happy to say everyone has risen to the challenge.
In maths we have been focussing on perfecting our problem solving and reasoning skills and I am also happy to say Blencathra class are amazing at this. In English we have read The Viewer and have written some excellent Wicked Writing pieces. We have even impressed Mrs Mitchell and Miss Astell with our everyday use of technical language.
Over the half term break if you feel that your child would benefit from extra spelling practice, I have sent home their Talk Homework book which has the curriculum spellings in the back. Also, if your child would like to practice their times table facts there are some awesome games on the top marks website- Hit the Button and Daily 10. The website links are:

Thank you again. I hope your all have a relaxing half term break.
Miss Ewart and Mrs Strong.
P.S Year 5- I will reward 25 points for each ‘and’ you can successfully change to a higher level conjunction. Good Luck!
Roald Dahl Day!
Blencathra class made some lovely memories during Roald Dahl day. From Mike TV to the Grand High Witch we all dressed as our favourite characters and enjoyed making BFJ dream jars and drawing Willy Wonka with the help of Quentin Blake himself!
