To link with our topic about the Vikings, our class went to Tullie House for a vikings workshop titled "What were the Vikings really like?" .This included covering: Vikings as warriors, Vikings as traders, Viking Burials, Vikings as settlers and Viking Gods. We were surprised to learn that Viking graves had been discovered locally outside of Carlisle!

A massive well done to the children who created their FANTASTIC projects about the Vikings. We enjoyed them being shared with the class and have learnt lots more interesting facts.

We have had a few changes to our class timetable now that we are not going swimming every Wednesday.  PE slots will be Monday and Wednesday however we may try to fit in other PE on different days depending on weather conditions.  Please ensure that you have a kit in school all week.

In science we have been investigating how different liquids can damage our teeth by using egg shells in place of teeth. Which liquid did the most damage?

As part of our Vikings work we have been composing our own songs about Viking raids!

Happy New Year!

I hope that you all had a restful and peaceful break.  Thank you so much for the lovely cards and gifts.  I was touched and particularly impressed with all the beautiful handwriting and spellings in the cards!

I am looking forward to another busy half term in Helvellyn class.  We will be joined by Miss Cassidy and Miss Branigan so there will be lots of opportunity for small group work with an adult.  Our topic for this term will be Vikings and Anglo Saxons.  Please see the topic grid below for some of the activities we will be completing.

Mrs A

We had a fabulous time on our class trip to the library. Lots of us were able to join the library and borrow some books for the first time. We then went to watch the original version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory but some of us just couldn't put down the books that we had just borrowed!

making music!

performing poetry

We carried out an experiment to see how long it takes chocolate to melt at different temperatures.  Which variables did we keep the same and which variable did we need to change?

Olympic Athlete Visit

On Wednesday 17th October Laura Samuel, an Olympic triple jumper, came to our school. All the school took part in circuits.

Today we have been investigating which drink is fizzier?  Can you remember which gas is in our fizzy drinks?  Does gas have a weight?  were the fizzy drinks heavier or lighter than the flat ones?

Science Investigation

It has been an absolutely fabulous start to the new school year. Everyone is getting more familiar with the routines in year 4 and we are all getting much better at organising ourselves!  Our spelling and tables tests will be every Friday morning and new spellings will be sent out in our spelling books that day.  If for any reason you miss those spellings please make sure that you ask me or a friend what they are before the following Friday.

thank you,

Mrs A

Welcome to year four!

I do hope that everyone has had a lovely restful holiday and are now ready for a fantastic year. Our topic this term is chocolate sensation, we will be looking at the history of chocolate and linking this with a study of Mayan civilisation. Our class text this term will be Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and we will also be studying the life and works of Roald Dahl.

PE days for this term are: Tuesday for football outside and Wednesday inside for gymnastics. Please make sure that you have a full school kit in school for each PE session.

We have had some changes to our homework policy, please refer to the other letter home tonight for the arrangements for homework for this term.

I am very much looking forward to this year and getting to know you all much better. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Either call the office to make an appointment or send me an email.
