11.11.20 YEAR ONE WILL REMEMBER THEM
Welcome to Year 1
What a very different end to this school year it has been for your children. By the time September comes, it will have been many months since most of them have been in school. The Year 1 team are really looking forward to teaching your children and helping them to settle back into Cumwhinton School life.
We hope that your child enjoys the new challenges and approaches to learning that Year 1 has to offer. Miss Tarbit will be your child’s teacher. Mrs Norris (Higher Level Teaching Assistant) will be supporting on Monday and Friday mornings and Miss Mooney (Senior Teaching Assistant) will be supporting on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Mrs Little will teach Year One on Monday afternoons and Mrs Batey will support. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and some Fridays Miss Mossop will be supporting in the afternoons and on Wednesday afternoons Miss Temple-Cox will be supporting.
The Year 1 curriculum builds upon and extends the experiences that children have had in Reception. The children will have a more formal learning environment in Year 1 but they will continue to learn through play, alongside being involved in exciting topics so that they remain motivated, enthused and eager learners. RWInc phonics will be taught every day to help with reading, writing and spelling. The children are expected to become more independent readers and writers as the year advances.
We will listen to your child read regularly in school to assess their progress. The children will also have lots of opportunities to read and enjoy books throughout the week at school independently. Your child will bring home a RwInc Book Bag reading book as well as a RWInc home book to read. They will also bring home a book (story or Non Fiction) for an adult at home to read to your child. We will name this the ‘adult book’ when written in the Log book each week. The Book bag book will be changed twice a week if needed and adult book will be changed once a week on a Monday. The RWInc home book will be sent home after they have read the book in school with an adult in Read Write Inc sessions.
We will be introducing ‘Talk Homework’ at the start of the year. It is a chance for your child to have a conversation with someone at home about a topic we are writing about in class. We will give detailed guidance about the topic and the kinds of questions you may want to discuss with your child. Your child will have their own ‘Talk Homework’ book that has information about the topic and there will be space for you to record notes about what you have discussed with your child. The children will be using these notes during their exciting writing session on a Friday. Throughout the year your child will be bringing home key words to read and spell.
The maths homework will be Learn Its and these will come home in a Learn its homework book. These may stay the same for a few weeks for you to recap and practise on a daily basis. New Learn its will be added some weeks.
The children will be doing PE twice a week, days will be confirmed shortly. Please ensure your child has their correct PE kit in school and that all items are clearly labelled. We will be outside for one of our PE sessions so a pair of joggers/tracksuit bottoms and a jumper would be useful as the weather turns colder. All kits will remain in school for the half-term. If your child wears earrings please can you either remove them on P.E. days or provide tape to cover them. The children will be given a school water bottle to keep in school. These will be sent home on Fridays to wash ready to be returned to school on Mondays. Please remember that we are a NUT FREE school.
Please use the home school log book as a communication between home and school. Please let us know the end of the day arrangements for your child - bus or going to after school club and also let us know as soon as you can if someone different will be picking them up. Each week I will put a message on our web page which will explain what we have been working on during the week. Remember to look at the school website for information too. Our class is called Skiddaw so please visit our class page to find photos and videos each week showing what your child has been learning. There will also be a power point for parents on the web page giving you more information about Year One. If you need to contact me via email, please use email@example.com.
Our topic for the Autumn Term is ‘Who do you think you are?’ Knowledge Organisers for History, Geography and Science can be viewed on the Cumwhinton school website – Key Information – Curriculum – Year 1. These will detail vocabulary and knowledge for each of the subject areas. Here you will also find a Parent Information Booklet for Year One and the targets Year 1 children will be working towards. These targets are what the children are expected to achieve by the end of Year 1and we will be working on them throughout the whole year. We will send home the RWInc set 1, set 2 and set 3 sounds and the common exception words that Year 1 children are expected to be able to read and spell by the end of the year.
If you have any questions or queries about your child’s progress, please do not hesitate to contact us either via the log book or our email address, firstname.lastname@example.org.
We look forward to a fun, happy and productive year with your children.
