Making Christingles

This week we have designed our door hangers that will be made of salt dough. The children have created designs that contain the first initial of their name and a chosen shape. The children made their salt dough on Wednesday and today we cut out the shapes they will need. The children also made a decoration ready for Christmas with the left over dough and some of them also had enough to take home.

In Maths we have been making and matching money amounts. We have been encouraging the children to work out the pounds first then the pence. For homework this week the children have to count the amount of money either in the jars or to pay for the ice creams depending on the work they have in their books.

In English we have read some more chapters of The Hodgeheg and the children wrote their instructions for how to cross the road safely. There is no Talk Homework this week.

Next we have assessment week in school and it is also Christmas jumper day on Friday 11th December.

Thank you so much for all of your generous donations for the toy hamper. We have managed to make 2 lovely hampers out of your donations for the raffle smiley

Have a great weekend,

Spelling books will not be sent home until after Christmas now but please keep practicing the year 2 key words. There is a list on our Welcome to Year 2 powerpoint below.

We have been so proud of Year 2 this week.

The phonics screening checks have now been completed and all of the children tried their very best.

In English we have started to read the Hodgeheg and discovered who the main characters are. The children have written descriptions of the park setting using some fantastic adjectives that they have collected. Next week we will be writing instructions for how to cross the road safely. The children have some Talk Homework linked to this task.

In Maths we have been counting in pounds and pence making sure we use p and £ in our answers. We are continuing to look at the 5 times tables for our homework.

In Gymnastics we have been performing jumps and different types of rolls. See some of the photos below.

We have started our design and technology unit. We are making a bedroom door sign with salt dough. We have looked at the features of door signs and next week we will be designing and making them.

Thank you to everyone who has donated a toy for our class hamper so far smiley

Have a great weekend,

Year 2 team

Key word spellings week beginning 23.11.20

What a busy week we have had! Please take a look at the photos below to see what we have been up to.

The children have no Talk Homework this week. We have finished our work on Grace and Family and next week we are starting to read The Hodgeheg by Dick King-Smith.

In Maths we have been learning to subtract two lots of 2 digit numbers by subtracting the ones first, then the tens before adding them back together. We have used place value counters to help us before using written methods and number lines to help solve word problem. The Maths homework this week is the 5 times table. The children can use their counting in 5s number line that they have in their books to help them if needed.

Phonics screening will take place week beginning 23rd November.

This is nothing for your child to worry about and they are familiar with the format. We will be telling the children to try their best and remember to Fred talk the words so that those pesky alien words don't trick us! Please keep practicing reading and sounding out the words which have been sent home in the phonics folders. Thank you

Anti-Bullying Week 16th - 20th November

This week we have been 'United Against Bullying'. We watched videos and talked about what bullying is and how can work together to make our school a safer and happier place. We designed our own odd socks as part of our MSSC learning. The children also made their own anti bullying wristbands and we discussed how we can be good friends.

Another busy week in Haystacks.

In Maths we have been using a number line to subtract 1 digit numbers from 2 digit numbers. We have also been using place value counters to help add two lots of 2 digit numbers. For Maths homework this week the children need to fill in the missing multiples of 5 counting forwards and backwards.

As part of English we have been looking at the features of postcards and the children have written a postcard in the role of Grace as part of exciting writing. Next week we will be learning what a non chronological report is. The children need to collect some facts about Africa as part of their Talk Homework (Where is Africa? What animals live there? What language do they speak? What food do they drink? etc)

In art we have created collages of the war memorial, village hall and village shop. The children chose different textures and colours to create their designs.

We watched Joe Wicks take part in the last 10 minutes of his 24 hour challenge as part of Children In Need and we joined in to support him.

Take a look at some of the photos we have taken this week.

Spellings week beginning 9.11.20

Friday 6th November 2020

Welcome back.

We hope you all managed to have a lovely break and stay safe over the half term holiday.

This week in Maths we have been finding number bonds to 100, 10 more and 10 less than a given number and also adding and subtracting 10 to numbers. We will be moving on to the 5 x tables so the children have a multiple of 5 number line in their maths homework book to look at this week.

In English we have been using 'because' to join our sentences and working hard on our diagonal joins in handwriting. If your child is on Accelerated Reader they have taken the Star Reader quiz this week to assess their reading. Your child may have a new ZPD range to choose from now. As the books get longer we do not not expect them to read it 3 times before doing a quiz. We only recommend reading a book several times if the whole book can be read in one sitting ( 10- 15 minutes). Next week in exciting writing we will be writing a postcard from Grace to her friends. All the information about the task is in the  Talk Homework book. We have also sent home some more words to read in preparation of the Phonics Screening Check that will take place at the end of November.

In Art we went in to the playground to collect different rubbings of our school surroundings. We will use these rubbing to inspire our collage work next week.

Have a great weekend and stay safe,

Year 2 team

Friday 23rd October 2020

We have completed our first half term in Year 2! The children have worked so hard and have adjusted well to all of the new routines and rules we have to keep everyone safe.

In maths this week we have using known facts to help us solve calculations. So if 3+2=5 30+20=50 , 10-1=9  100-10= 90. The children have brought home addition to 100 for their homework. They need to add multiples of 10 to make 100.

In English we have worked hard to find words to help describe the market in Grace and Family. We look at and tasted some fruit to try and gather exciting adjectives to describe them. The children then used the adjectives in expanded noun phrases. The children do not have any Talk Homework this week but we have sent home some phonics words for them to read.

In Geography we have been looking at the different land use within the village (recreational, residential and agricultural). The children created a key for their map to show how they had coloured their map.

We have sent home some information about DB Primary along with their log in details. We have also included the Big Maths and Purple Mash logins so you have them handy. If you can please explore DB primary. There have been some tasks assigned for the children to have a go at.

Miss Tarbit has asked us to mention that some of the RWInc reading  books and Mr Men books have not been returned. These books were given to the children just before we went into lockdown. Please can you take a look at your book shelves at home so that they can be returned and used by our new Year 1 children. They will have the Cumwhinton School stamp inside.

We hope you all  have a lovely half term. Stay safe.

Friday 16th October 2020

In English this week we have created our own story maps for Grace and Family. The children presented these to the whole class.

We have been working on fact families in Maths. We are encouraging the children to use the words addition and subtraction when describing the calculations they are using. The children have been introduced to the word 'inverse' when describing the opposite to addition. The inverse of addition is subtraction, the inverse to subtraction is addition. We have used the inverse to help check our calculations.

During dance the children worked in pairs to create a dance to the count of 8. We then joined all of the dances together to create our own routine.

As part of our geography topic we have been looking at the human and physical features of Cumwhinton. Next week we will be investigating the different land uses within the village.

The children have brought home some maths homework, Talk Homework and phonics words to read.

Brain Boxes received the most table points this week so they got to choose a prize from the prize box.

Thank you to everyone who has donated food for the Food Bank.

Please could all families check if they have any cardigans or jumpers at home that don't belong to their child. We have a couple of children who have misplaced them. Next week we will check all the PE bags for the jumpers/cardigans incase they have got mixed up. We will send home PE bags next Friday so they can be washed over half term.

Many thanks for your continued support,

The Year 2 team

In RE the children made Jewish lalavs. Jewish families make them during Sukkot which is the Jewish Harvest Festival.

we created and shared our story maps for grace and family

SPELLING WORDS WEEK BEGINNING 12.10.20 (also in childrens spelling books)

Friday 9th October 2020

We have so busy this week! As part of Black History Month we have been looking at the life of Rosa Parks. The children have enjoyed watching a film about her life and listened carefully to an actress acting in role as Rosa. We had a good discussion about how Rosa must have felt and how some things have changed since she stood up for what she believed in.

In Maths we have been counting in steps of 2, 5, 10 and 3. We have sent home their current learn its challenge to go through for their homework this week.

In English we have been looking at the features of a letter and written our own letter to Grace as part of our exciting writing. The children have no talk homework this week.

As part of our topic work we have been looking at the ariel view of Cumwhinton and have been labelling familiar landmarks in the village - school, park, school field, shop, post office and pub. Some of the children were also able to  find their own homes on the map as well.

We have sent home some more pseudo (nonsense) words for the children to read at home. The children will get their spellings books next week to bring home.

Whizz Kids received the most table points this week so they got to choose a prize from the prize box. Each table gets the chance to earn tables points for being organised, following the values, trying their best and setting a good example.

The children all looked fantastic dressed in yellow today. Well done everyone #helloyellow

Calls will take place weeks commencing 5th and 12th October and last for 5-10 minutes. This is a new experience for us all so please bear with us if the timings are not perfect.

You can of course email us at anytime if you have anything to ask or discuss.

Friday 2nd October 2020

In English this week we have been revisiting the ea sound in phonics and looking at common and proper nouns. We have read all of Grace and Family and looked at how she feels about her new family. In exciting writing we have written a diary entry as Grace. Next week the children will be writing a letter to Grace describing their family.

In Maths we have been comparing and ordering numbers and objects as well as working on our 10 x tables.

As part of our Science work we have been answering the question 'Do we get faster as we get older?' The children have helped to plan an investigation and record their results.

In RE we have been looking at how and why Christians celebrate Harvest. We have completed our whole dance routine to 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough'. Look out for some videos next week.

As part of our Geography topic we have been looking at why we need postcodes and have used the laptops to search for the postcodes of different places in Carlisle and further afield.

The children have brought home a folder with some phonics words and sounds to read (both real and pseudo words). We will add to this folder every week so please can it be returned on a Thursday.

Friday 25th September 2020

We have had a great week looking at place value in maths and partitioning numbers into tens and ones as well as using the greater than/less than/equal to symbols  ≥ ≤  = to compare numbers. In English we have started to read Grace and Family by Mary Hoffman and Caroline Birch. The children have some Talk Homework linked to the book this week. More information about the task can be found in their talk homework book. In geography we have been looking at where Cumwhinton School is and learning the different parts of an address. We have almost completed our dance to 'Ain't no mountain high enough'. The children have been fantastic when remembering all of the timings and different moves. We hope to film some of the finished routine to show you all next week.

This week the children have spellings, maths homework and Talk homework to complete. We have also sent home some letter formation to support the work we are doing in class.

We celebrated the end of another successful week with a zoom assembly led by Mrs Mitchell.

Before lockdown, when the children were in year 1, Miss Tarbit sent Mr Men books home for the children to share. She is still missing 9 books that were not returned. Could you please check at home for these books and return any you may find.

Many thanks,

Mrs Rickerby, Mrs Hunter, Miss Mossop and Mrs Little

letter join login for home use.

This week in Maths we have started to look at counting objects to 100, how numbers can be represented and the value of tens and ones in 2 digit numbers. The children have a maths homework book in their bags. We are moving on to step 7 of the Learn its where the children will be learning the 10 times tables. This week the children have a counting in 10s maze to complete as well as a multiples of 10 numberline that they can keep at home to help if needed. Next week we will introduce spellings and talk homework. Spellings will be given out on a Tuesday to be returned for the following Monday. Maths homework and Talk homework will be sent home on a Friday to be returned the following Thursday.

We have been working on our curly caterplillar letters (a, o, d, c, g, s, f, q) in handwriting this week. Many of the children are now on Accelerated Reader books now which means that once they have read their books they complete a quiz about what they have read. If the children have a shorter book we would like them to read it three times before completing a quiz. The internet has not been been working very well in our classroom this week so it has taken a few days to get through the quizzes. Next week we hope it behaves itself and we can get through all the quizzes.

In Geography we have been discussing the differences between towns, villages and cities. The children have written about where they live and the type of house they live in.

In Science we have been learning about how baby animals grow and change. Please refer to the Knowledge organiser below.

Next week will are starting a new text in English called 'Grace and Family'.

Thank you for your continued support.

Have a great weekend,

Mrs Rickerby, Mrs Hunter, Miss Mossop and Mrs Little

Your child will bring home a spelling book next week with the first 6 words to learn from the year 2 key words. They will be tested the following Tuesday so please practice at home. Please send the spelling book back to school on Monday 28th September so new words can be added. Depending on how we get on we may practice the same set of words for a few weeks so please check your childs spelling book. There is a full list of all the year 1 and year 2 key words on our class powerpoint. It would be useful to revise the year 1 key words with your child if you have time.
